Laura Ž. Bukša: "My first steps in career"

Author: Laura Zaklina Buksa

In the last stage of secondary school, the time came when one had to be aware of one’s strengths and weaknesses in order to be able to choose the most appropriate university, field of study and, at best, get to the most suitable profession. Already in high school, as school president, I organized events, campaigns and created promotional materials to make the school and its activities more popular. Many young people, including me, felt that they liked and were interested in everything, but at one point it was important to make a specific decision, to dare and to take small steps forward. So, in parallel with my studies at the Riga Stradins University program “International Marketing and Advertising”, I started working as the junior project manager in the company “BSMS”. From the beginning of the short start-up period, I have already appreciated that I can practice what I am learning at university, consolidating and testing theoretical knowledge. This is a great opportunity to learn from experienced professionals who can share their experience over the years. I also appreciate that my direct supervisors can help me grow and develop both as a person and as a professional. I also feel every day that marketing is a dynamic industry that involves continuous learning, so it will be suitable for everyone who wants to develop rapidly in a relatively short period of time. From my previous experience, I recommend starting with a school internship in a potential job. Within two months, I realized that the BSMS work environment attracted me, so I decided to nominate myself for this particular vacancy. It is worthwhile to take advantage of various opportunities during your life, especially at the beginning of your career, such as going abroad, participating in various events and getting to know people from different fields. This is a new challenge - to test my knowledge and skills in the BSMS environment, but I feel that I am where I really need to be.
